e-Aadhaar PDF Password

The password UIDAI publishes for a downloaded e-Aadhaar PDF: the first four letters of the name in capitals, then the year of birth. Unlocking a copy can break the digital signature. Keep the original.

No filing deadline

e-Aadhaar PDF passwordFirst 4 letters of the name in CAPITALS, then the year of birth (YYYY). Spaces are not part of the password. UIDAI examples: SURESH KUMAR, 1990 β†’ SURE1990. SAI KUMAR β†’ SAIK1990. P. KUMAR β†’ P.KU1990. RIA β†’ RIA1990.Confirmed
Digital signatureThe handbook says e-Aadhaar is digitally signed by UIDAI. Removing the password makes a different file, so that signature will not validate on the copy. Keep the PDF you downloaded.Confirmed

How the four letters are chosen

Use the name as printed on the Aadhaar. Drop spaces, keep a full stop, take the first four characters, and add the four-digit year. P. KUMAR keeps the dot, which is why the password is P.KU1990 and not PKUM1990. A name shorter than four characters uses the whole name, as in RIA1990.

The helper on the Aadhaar password page does that in the browser. It does not download Aadhaar, and it does not talk to UIDAI.

When not to unlock it

If a portal asked for the e-Aadhaar itself, upload the original password-protected PDF. An unlocked copy can fail a signature check even though the pages look the same. Unlock only when you need a copy you can read or print, and store the original separately.
