Compress PDF to 500KB β€” Free, No Upload

For email and multi-page scans β€” not a 300KB rule

Bring a PDF under 500KB for email and KYC-style uploads. Free and private. Check a tighter rule, such as 300KB, before you rely on this preset.

Strong compression turns pages into images

To hit a small target, each page may be saved as a JPEG. Text on those pages is not selectable or searchable, and a screen reader cannot read it. If the file already fits, the original text is kept.

Up to 50 MB. The file is read in this tab and is not uploaded.

Size or quality

Target size tries to finish at or under the limit. Quality level is a fixed setting when you do not have a number to hit.

Trying for 500 KB (5,00,000 bytes).

Best for photocopies and camera scans. Colour photos of documents get much smaller in gray.

Documents that belong at 500KB

A few pages of a rent agreement, a short bank or KYC pack, and scanned correspondence usually land under 500KB once the pages are moderate-resolution images. It is also a comfortable size for emailing a document without a shared drive. Text-only PDFs often need no image pass at all at this budget, so copy and search keep working.

500KB is 500,000 bytes. On a phone, five to ten grayscale pages are a realistic fit. A long colour scan of a whole file can still miss it. The screen shows the size before you download, including the exact byte count.

Do not use 500KB for a 300KB rule

Some uploads are tighter than this preset. Protean PAN instructions have asked for supporting PDFs around 300KB or less. A 500KB file fails that rule even if it looks small in your gallery. Choose Custom, type 300, compress, and confirm the byte count is at or under 300,000 before you submit. Recheck the live page on the portal β€” the cap changes, and this site does not file the form for you.

Photo and signature limits on exam forms are a different problem. Those are usually JPG files in a 10–50KB band, not PDFs. Compressing a PDF to 500KB will not produce a passport-size photo.

If the portal wanted something smaller

Move to the 200KB or 100KB page, turn grayscale on, and drop pages you do not need to upload. Splitting first is more reliable than hoping a 30-page scan will collapse into 500KB and stay legible.

How to use the Compress PDF to 500KB

  1. Add the PDF

Agreements, KYC packs, and short scans are typical. The file is not uploaded.

  2. Confirm 500KB is what the form allows

This preset is 500,000 bytes. If the notice says 300KB, choose Custom and type 300 instead of using this button.

  3. Compress

Text PDFs often finish on the structure pass. Scans are reduced toward a readable JPEG.

  4. Read the byte count

Download the file only after the page shows it is under the limit you actually need.

Compress PDF to 500KB FAQ

Is 500KB small enough for a PAN document upload?

Often no. Protean PAN instructions have asked for supporting PDFs around 300KB or less, which is tighter than this preset. Type 300 as a custom target and confirm the result is at or under 300,000 bytes. Recheck the current portal page β€” the cap changes.

What usually fits under 500KB?

A few pages of a rent agreement, a short KYC pack, or scanned letters. Five to ten grayscale pages are realistic. A long colour scan of a whole file may still come back over the line, and the page will say so.

Will a text PDF stay searchable at 500KB?

Usually yes. At this budget the structure rewrite is often enough, and that path does not turn pages into images. A file that was already a scan had no text to keep.

Can I make photo and signature files here?

No. Exam photo and signature limits are almost always JPG or JPEG in a small KB band, not a 500KB PDF. This tool only compresses PDFs.

Is the document uploaded?

No. The file is processed by JavaScript inside your browser tab and never sent to our servers. Closing the tab clears it from memory.

Quick answers

Should a PAN supporting document be compressed to 500KB?

Not if the instruction says 300KB. Protean PAN guidelines have asked for supporting PDFs around 300KB or less, and a 500KB file fails that check even when it looks small. Use a custom target of 300 and confirm the result is at or under 300,000 bytes, then recheck the live portal because the number changes between cycles. 500KB is a better fit for a few pages of a rent agreement, a short KYC pack, or an email attachment. It will not produce the separate JPG photo and signature files that exam forms ask for. Those are image uploads with their own KB bands.
